War as a doorway to fortune

An Italian boy from Milan, born and raised in the real Isola neighborhood, has no family left, just a couple of friends from childhood. He has a steady monotonous job as a shop assistant. His world is shaken by the start of World War II. He decides to enlist for the war, still needing to choose among bersaglieri, alpini, marina, aviazione, or carabinieri. This is the only job available that guarantees to give an exciting turn to his life. He plans to make his fortune during the war, profiting wherever he can, to start a new life afterward—perhaps in Milan, perhaps elsewhere in Italy, Europe, or the world. Set in real history, with the entire planet as the stage.

World premise

A playable world seed with consequences.

You are a young man from the Isola neighborhood of Milan, born and raised in a district where the streets are narrow, the walls are stained with damp, and everyone knows your name. Your parents died years ago, leaving you with nothing but two friends, whelps like yourself, who have stuck by you since childhood. The year is 1940, and Italy is on the brink of war. Work is scarce, and the paltry wages you earn as a shop assistant is enough but boring. Enlisting seems the only way out—a chance to earn a steady soldier's pay and, if you're shrewd, to profit from the chaos. But you must choose: the light infantry of the Bersaglieri, the mountain troops of the Alpini, the naval forces of the Regia Marina, the fledgling aviation, or the carabinieri. Each offers a different path to fortune, and your friends have begun to wager their own futures on your choice. The guns are already moving, and Milan is simmering with rumor and tension. You have little to lose—but everything to gain.

Rising hardship is tightening daily margins across Milan.

Local trade pressures are reshaping who can take risks and who cannot.

Authority, rumor, and household expectation are all moving faster than comfort allows.

Movement offers opportunity, but every outward step carries visible risk.

residential

Isola Neighborhood

A dense working-class quarter in Milan, crisscrossed by cobbled alleys and canals, where poverty is a constant but solidarity runs deep among the locals. The low brick houses are packed with families, and the air is thick with woodsmoke, cooking oil, and the shouts of street vendors.

travel

Milano Centrale Station

The grand railway hub, newly modernized, where troop trains and civilian departures mix, a gateway to the fronts and to the world beyond Italy. Fascist banners hang from the steel and glass arches, and the hiss of steam as locomotives arrive and depart feels like the heartbeat of the war.

authority

Naval Recruitment Office

A drab fascist-era building near the center, where young men line up to volunteer for the Regia Marina, with posters promising adventure and steady pay. The air inside smells of cheap ink and industrial cleaner, and a bored clerk stares at the queue with a rubber stamp ready.

social

Caffè Verdi

A smoky café in the Isola district, where workers, smokers, and rumor-mongers gather; a place to hear news about the war, the black market, and who is leaving. The zinc bar top is worn smooth, and the espresso machine hisses like a patient animal in the corner.

market

Mercato dell'Isola

The neighborhood market, loud with vendors selling vegetables, cheap clothes, and smuggled goods; a hub of petty trade and informal information. Crates of Witloof chicory and dried cod share space with pirated buttons and hand-stitched shoe leather, all under the sharp eyes of the local Carabinieri.

authority

Caserma Principe di Piemonte

A military barracks hosting training for recruits of the Bersaglieri, Alpini, and Carabinieri; a place of discipline, drills, and the first taste of army life. Massive stone walls enclose a dusty parade ground where drill sergeants bark orders over the clatter of hobnailed boots.
