Gilt Creek: The Price of Gold

Montana, 1884. Gold buys influence; survival runs on labor, credit, and favors.

A fictional Montana gold boomtown in 1884, built over contested land and divided between exhausted placer claims and capital-hungry quartz mines. Bankers and mine owners live on Crown Hill; merchants balance respectability against debt; skilled workers defend their bargaining power; wage miners, laundresses, cooks, teamsters, and unemployed prospectors keep the town alive. Chinese businesses, Black homesteaders, immigrant boardinghouses, and neighboring Indigenous communities pursue distinct interests within unequal institutions. A disputed rich strike, dangerous pumping failure, approaching debt deadlines, and a proposed water monopoly threaten to turn opportunity into a company town. Wealth, class, race, gender, property, citizenship, reputation, and personal loyalties influence access without determining individual character or destiny.

World premise

A playable world seed with consequences.

Monday, May 19, 1884. Snowmelt browns Gilt Creek while the stamp mill pounds beyond the cottonwoods. The morning stage brings a bank examiner, three job seekers, and news of a rail survey. Outside the assay office, a disputed sample promises the richest vein in years. Miners at the Deep Bell shaft report failing pumps, but payday is Friday and the manager demands another shift. Boardinghouse bills fall due tonight; water-company agents are buying creek frontage; a survey crosses land whose ownership the town prefers not to discuss. In the street, an injured miner's family asks for witnesses. Before noon, everyone will want your labor, signature, silence, or help.

TODAY — Choose your opportunity: with $150, two weeks of prepaid board, tools, and trusted contacts, the player can take Samuel paid freight or repair work, meet Clara about her claim, or hear the water dispute. Nora can introduce neighbors. Choosing an opportunity uses time; basic survival is already secure.

WITHIN 48 HOURS — Deep Bell pumps: help Reed secure parts and testimony, negotiate a safe stoppage, or organize support for affected families. Ignoring warnings raises flood risk, but a catastrophe is not predetermined.

MAY 21–22 — Who owns the water: obtain the franchise text, corroborate Mei Lin receipts, hear the Cottonwood delegation, and propose enforceable alternatives before the hearing.

MAY 23 — Payday and solidarity: monitor wage payment, build an inclusive relief fund, mediate terms, or help workers bargain. A strike without food and trust can fail.

Locations

commercial center

Main Street and Assay Square

Boardwalks, assay windows, general store, post office, and stage stop. Workers seek jobs at dawn; merchants judge credit; gossip travels by noon. Assay queues and public notices determine who learns of claims first. Most town districts lie 5–20 minutes away on foot. The Golden Lantern Saloon and Gazette Office occupy adjoining Main Street buildings: Saloon, card room, small stage, upstairs rented rooms, and a newspaper shop next door. Bartenders, performers, sex workers, printers, and patrons have independent interests. Respectability affects treatment; consent and boundaries matter. Gambling is uncertain, witnesses imperfect, and advertising funds the press.

transport

Freight Yard and Livery

Wagons, corrals, hay sheds, smithy, and stage depot. No railway reaches town yet. Mud, lame animals, bridge damage, and credit interrupt supplies. Contracts favor established teamsters; casual loaders wait at the gate.

civic care

Chapel, Schoolhouse and Cemetery

Separate worship schedules, a schoolroom, relief kitchen, and burial ground. Charity sustains families but donors contest eligibility and curriculum. Funerals reveal occupational danger and unequal means; children balance schooling with household work.

authority

County Offices and Jail

Sheriff, recorder, hearing room, and cramped cells. Filing time, fees, witnesses, interpreters, and access to lawyers influence justice. Records can be examined through ordinary procedure; patrons cannot legally dictate every outcome.

working-class housing

Tin Cup Boardinghouse and Workers Row

Crowded rented rooms, wash lines, shared privies, and shift workers sleeping by daylight. Nora Keene keeps a credit ledger and organizes meals for injured families. Lodgers exchange tools, news, childcare, and arguments; eviction disrupts employment.

elite residential

Crown Hill

Large houses, fenced gardens, private dinners, and the investors club above the dust. Invitations and references buy access; servants carry news between classes. Mortgaged grandeur conceals financial fragility. Public roads remain accessible, private parlors do not.

Factions

mining capital · influence 86

Deep Bell Consolidated

Owner Silas Voss seeks water control, stable labor, and a rail connection before loan renewal. Uses payroll, contracts, lawyers, and council lobbying. Engineer Elias Reed favors repairs; investors demand output. Can negotiate phased safety work or cooperatives when evidence changes costs.

labor association · influence 58

Miners Benevolent and Protective Lodge

Organizer Patrick Doyle seeks reliable pay, safe pumps, injury aid, and elected pit delegates. Strike fund is small; skilled and casual workers disagree, and some members resist inclusive solidarity. Success depends on bridges to cooks, teamsters, and Chinese businesses.

commercial coalition · influence 61

Main Street Merchants League

Wants solvent customers, open freight routes, fire protection, and no company-store monopoly. Split between bank-dependent owners and independents. Can sponsor mediation, extend strike credit, or abandon workers when accounts deteriorate.

community association · influence 38

Willow Lane Mutual Aid Society

Mei Lin and fellow merchants coordinate emergency loans, translation, funerals, and legal defense. Seek reliable water and protection of businesses. Older cautious members favor petitions; younger members want cross-community boycotts. Trust requires reciprocal action.

small producers · influence 43

Free Claims Cooperative

Prospectors pool assays, tools, and legal fees against claim consolidation. Members dispute how much ownership to share. A new vein could rescue them or dissolve solidarity; transparent sampling and accounts create durable power.

land and water negotiation · influence 46

Cottonwood Water and Access Delegation

A specific negotiating coalition of Indigenous representatives and affected rural water users, not a government for every community. Seeks halt to unauthorized surveying, preserved crossing access, and accountable water agreements. Members retain distinct authority and may reject settler allies terms.

Pressure

Opening rumors

Credibility 25

Saloon argument

Someone says the lodge sabotaged the pump. Unsupported accusation: maintenance records and shift witnesses offer a way to test it.

Credibility 55

Assay queue

Clara has found a fortune in Widowmaker Gulch. The sample bears gold, but grade, origin, ownership, and recovery costs remain uncertain.

Credibility 35

A worried depositor

The examiner has come to close the bank. The examiner arrival is real; closure is speculation, and reckless repetition may cause a run.

Credibility 65

Willow Lane shop talk

A water-board member received company money. Receipts exist, but their purpose requires corroboration before alleging bribery.

Credibility 60

Freight-yard conversation

A survey stake near Council Crossing moved after dark. Samuel recorded a change; the field book and survey crew could establish why.

Credibility 75

Kitchen volunteers

A wealthy donor wants aid denied to disfavored households. Celia knows the proposed condition; the committee has not accepted it.
