Modern Day AU - BlackWood

Debt, rumor, and ordinary survival under mounting pressure

Blackwood is a prestigious private research university in Bellweather, Massachusetts, surrounded by wealth, ambition, academic pressure, social politics, parties, relationships, rumors, and secrets. The world is a persistent modern college-life simulation set in 2026. Blackwood and the surrounding town continue to exist and change independently of the player character. Students, faculty, families, organizations, and social circles have their own lives, relationships, goals, conflicts, reputations, and secrets. The player character, Imani Okafor, is a sophomore transfer student studying Fine Arts. She enters Blackwood without an established social reputation and gradually becomes part of its wider ecosystem. The world is not a predetermined story. Events should emerge naturally from the people, systems, relationships, institutions, and circumstances within it. Major developments are not guaranteed to happen unless established elsewhere as part of the world's history or a specific plot arc.

World premise

A playable world seed with consequences.

Welcome to Blackwood University. Founded in 1897, Blackwood is one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. Its reputation is built on academic excellence, enormous wealth, influential alumni, powerful families, and generations of institutional prestige. But beneath the polished image is a completely different student experience. Blackwood is a living college community filled with friendships, rivalries, parties, relationships, academic pressure, social climbing, gossip, Greek life, hookups, scandals, ambition, family expectations, and ordinary moments of college life. The player enters this world as Imani Okafor, a 19-year-old sophomore transfer student in Fine Arts. She knows no one at Blackwood yet and has no predetermined place within its social hierarchy. What happens next is not predetermined. People will make choices. Relationships will change. Rumors will spread. Plans will succeed or fail. Students will become closer, fall out, date, break up, compete, party, disappear from one another's lives, or become unexpectedly important. Some events will involve Imani. Others will happen without her ever knowing. Blackwood should feel like a place that was already alive before Imani arrived—and will continue moving whether she is watching or not.

Pressure

Opening rumors

Credibility 39

The Blackwood Whisper / student submissions

Alex Whitmore and Maddie Reed were supposedly seeing each other toward the end of last spring. Maddie never confirmed the relationship when people asked, but she also never seemed particularly interested in correcting anyone. Alex, meanwhile, reportedly refused to answer questions about it and once walked away when a Whisper contributor tried to interview him about the two of them. Some students think there was actually something there; others think Maddie simply enjoyed letting people believe it.

Credibility 68

Student submissions / secondhand accounts

At a private party near the end of last spring, a sophomore was allegedly found unconscious in an upstairs bathroom after taking a combination of drugs. Several students reportedly left before campus authorities arrived, and people who were there gave conflicting accounts of what happened. Some students claimed the party involved recreational drugs being openly distributed, while others insisted the student had taken something without knowing exactly what it was. No public university statement ever gave students a complete account of the incident, leaving the story to spread through private group chats and whispered conversations.

Credibility 80

Anonymous student submission / former organization member

A significant amount of money reportedly disappeared from a student organization’s budget last spring after an event that raised far less money than organizers claimed. According to the rumor, someone with access to the organization’s finances quietly moved or spent the money before the discrepancy was discovered. The organization never publicly acknowledged a theft, and no formal accusation was made, but several students allegedly left the group afterward under uncomfortable circumstances. Some believe the missing money was covered privately to avoid an investigation.
